KILLING THE ART OF CONVERSATION

Recently I had been to dinner with my friends. Eight of us sitting on a square table in a fine dining atmosphere waiting to be served in utter silence, as I noticed. Soon I perceived that I was the only one sitting on the table along with seven ‘human bodies’ resembling my friends. SMARTPHONE-ADDICTIONThese bodies were absorbed by their smartphones. Now I grew eager to know what was the thing more important in that smartphone then this reunion. So I started to peep into their phones. Two of them, busy texting. One was busy boasting his views about the restaurant on the humble request of our very own google. The revolutionary guy had to tweet his idea and enlighten his little ‘follower army’ at this very moment. Another guy is setting up his LinkedIn profile and one next to him had to pay his years of bills this night. The last guy was wiggling hard to know what he should do. So he was just opening and closing all the applications on his phone to find at least some engagement. This ain’t happening erratically but has become an odd practice, ruining the fun of the get-together.

Even while traveling on a train or a bus how many heads can you see that are mentally present there, out of the virtual world and interacting with people around them. If you don’t have a company you may talk to a stranger sitting beside you. Definitely, you will know something new, some news, some experiences that you can’t get in your phone. This makes you socially aware, improves your communication skill, boost your confidence and will help you make new friends. 920x920Statistically social media aids in making lots of new friends, but in actual these are mere acquaintances and not true friends. This habit is prevailing so much because smartphones give you a platform where you can create a world where you are perfect and you get to present yourself to people as you may like. Or some people who lack confidence, try to look engaged in their smartphones to avoid the crowd. Well, I must say, that’s true somehow. Using your phone is the best hack to dodge the people you may not like talking to. Some people take out their phones just to look busy and then there are some eminent personalities who have a real reason to catch out their phones and keep their followers updated. But somewhere I think it’s not the fault of the people but their surroundings. The noisy, hazy, artificial lives have bored and exhausted the minds of the dwellers, leaving in them with least interest in the outside world.

Then I realized the same case applies to me. When sitting outdoors, I can see nothing but the concrete towers, honking vehicles, exhausted and irritated people, so I put my hands in my pocket where I can feel my wallet, some keys and a handkerchief out of which the precious smartphone comes to the rescue as it seems to be the best option to surpass this stressful environment.
